Carbon Footprint Services
Overview

A carbon footprint shows the effect you, or your organisation, have on the climate.

A carbon footprint is the total carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions that an organisation, activity, event or product is responsible for, usually measured across its full life cycle. It shows where emissions come from and gives a baseline for tracking how well they are being reduced.

01Types of carbon footprint

01

Corporate carbon footprint

The whole business, from manufacturing to disposal, including transport of goods, business travel, total energy use and the company's recycling strategy.

02

Product carbon footprint (LCA)

The emissions over a product's life cycle, primary and secondary, calculated cradle-to-grave (raw materials to disposal) or cradle-to-gate (raw materials until the product is ready for use).

02What a footprint does for you

  • Audit and reduceMeasure the climate impact of a company, activity or product, and a route to lowering it.
  • Lower costsLower production costs and a move to more sustainable methods.
  • Stronger salesLow-footprint products are more competitive in global markets.
  • New opportunitiesDisclosure can open business and funding opportunities, support international standards and lead to global partnerships.

03What you receive

01

Carbon footprint report

An audit report of the greenhouse gas emissions of a company, activity or product across all its work processes, prepared to international standards.

02

Carbon footprint tool

A flexible tool that calculates the footprint from its component items, for ongoing monitoring and faster decisions on cutting emissions.

Common questions

Corporate or product footprint: where do we start?

Most organisations start with the corporate footprint to see the whole picture, then study their main products.

Cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave?

Cradle-to-gate stops when the product is ready to leave the factory. Cradle-to-grave follows it through use and disposal, and is generally given more credit.

What data do we need to provide?

Typically fuel and electricity records, quantities of the main materials, transport and travel data and waste records. We send a data request at the start.

Scope follows the activities listed in Sontrova's commercial register. Work that requires a licence or approval is carried out once the relevant licence is in place.
