Integrated Environmental Solutions
Overview

Studies, measurements and waste plans that let a project move ahead and a facility stay compliant.

Five practices under one service, so the findings of one feed directly into the next: impact studies before a project, economic analysis of environmental policy, measurement of operating conditions, and waste plans built on the waste hierarchy.

01Environmental Studies

On-site studies show how human activity will affect the environment before a site is developed or bought, and how the built and natural environment interact. We deliver anything from a single technical section to full management of the study and the planning process, for projects of any size.

01

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Assesses the environmental and socio-economic consequences of a project, positive and negative, so decision-makers can weigh them before a permit is granted.

02

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)

Brings environmental, socio-economic and sustainability factors into policies, plans and programmes.

Topics a study covers

  • Efficient water use
  • Clean, efficient energy
  • Built-environment layout
  • Land conservation
  • Biodiversity, habitats and species
  • Climate change
  • Green technology
  • Green transport
  • Recycling and waste reduction
  • Microclimate

Studies we prepare

  • EIA and ESIA studies
  • Environmental risk assessment, quantitative and qualitative
  • Environmental management systems
  • Environmental economics and accounting studies
  • Due diligence and environmental auditing
  • Environmental conformity studies for industrial, tourism and other activities

02Environmental & Social Studies

An ESIA combines the economic evaluation of a project with its environmental consequences. Assessments are kept impartial and free of conflicts of interest.

  1. ScreeningWhether an EIA, ESIA or SEA is needed, how the process works, and the planning and legal requirements.
  2. Project descriptionThe project, its sources of disturbance, impacts and alternatives.
  3. BaselineFauna, flora, air, soil, water, socio-economic setting and cultural heritage.
  4. Impacts and mitigationNature and scope of each impact, temporary or permanent, local or regional, and how it is mitigated.
  5. Non-technical summaryThe findings in plain language.
  6. Permitting and consultationSupport through permitting and public consultation.

Typical projects

  • Energy and oil & gas facilities
  • Industries
  • Wind farms and renewable infrastructure
  • Urban and regional planning (SEA)

03Environmental Economic Studies

The economics of environmental policy, covering climate change, air and water quality and other environment, health and safety issues, with a focus on energy and climate policy. We support environmental strategy and compliance with economic models, and evaluate the economic impact of government policies and infrastructure investment, for public bodies, companies and trade associations.

Industries covered

  • Electricity
  • Oil, natural gas and refining
  • Petrochemicals and chemicals
  • Coal
  • Cement, lime, glass and ceramics
  • Pulp and paper
  • Iron, steel and aluminium
  • Plastics
  • Cars, trucks, airlines and shipping
  • Forestry
  • Construction and outdoor equipment

Outputs

  • Reports
  • White papers
  • Presentations
  • Briefing material for authorities, boards and associations

04Measurements & Monitoring

Testing finds the worst-case conditions that need improvement to meet international standards, so that daily operations and projects stay environmentally responsible. For the industrial, service, private and public sectors, with analysis through approved laboratories.

  • Particulates: TSP, PM10, PM7, PM5, PM2.5, PM1
  • Noise intensity, noise dose and octave-band survey
  • Workplace pollutants and gases
  • Vibration and heat stress
  • Industrial stack emissions and particulates
  • Continuous ambient air monitoring
  • Illumination intensity
  • Exhaust emissions
  • Earthing resistance
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Thermal mapping

05Waste Management

Consultancy for the waste and recycling sector, advising waste producers, waste management companies, regulators and investors, for every type of waste.

The waste hierarchy we work by

  1. Prevention
  2. Minimisation
  3. Reuse
  4. Recycling
  5. Energy recovery
  6. Disposal

Waste types

  • Municipal
  • Household
  • Commercial
  • Industrial
  • Hazardous
  • Agricultural
  • Mining

Common questions

When does a project need an impact assessment?

Usually before a new site is developed or bought, and before an expansion or a change in activity. Screening confirms which study applies before fieldwork starts.

What is the difference between an EIA and an SEA?

An EIA looks at a specific project. An SEA looks earlier, at a policy, plan or programme.

Who carries out the laboratory analysis?

Approved laboratories. We plan and supervise the sampling and interpret the results against the limits that apply to you.

Scope follows the activities listed in Sontrova's commercial register. Work that requires a licence or approval is carried out once the relevant licence is in place.
